Roses Unread fuses stylistic differences between genres with The Ugly Truth

It’s not often that you hear a crushing alt-rock instrumental paired with vocal stylings that one could expect from a country superstar, but then there’s Roses Unread. The group hails from Tennessee, a state known for its world-class studio musicians, and this band clearly has experience in that realm. Their new single, The Ugly Truth, brilliantly combines grooving rhythms with soaring vocals that’s sure to grace radio waves around the world.
The song begins with a soft intro led by vocalist Allison Teague Purifoy. Her angelic and well-controlled voice is complemented beautifully by the mellow, reverb-laden guitars until it kicks violently into the first verse. The instrumental was reminiscent of classic Nothing More, combining polyrhythmic chugs from guitarist John Purifoy and bassist Jed Hood with a more open-sounding pre chorus that brilliantly built tension into the chorus. Drummer Rocky Griggs did a wonderful job of driving the song with a hard-hitting cadence.
The cinematics of the music video for The Ugly Truth were top notch - the color choice and imagery were on point, and the band added a level of creepiness by having everyone except the vocalist dress in Slenderman-esque garb. The videographer deserves a gold star for the editing alone, let alone the shot placement and coloring. The video did exactly what a great music video does - keep the viewer engaged while also perfectly complimenting the song.
The Ugly Truth is a well-executed song from top to bottom - the band are clearly skilled musicians and the video does wonders for the overall listener experience. If you’re a fan of alt-rock acts like Nothing More, Sevendust, Lacuna Coil, or Breaking Benjamin, look no further than Roses Unread.
