Mosaics brings the slam with “Gaslighter (Venom)”

Written by JD Walker

One of the biggest elements that’s missing in the music industry right now is the live experience, and more specifically the experience of a hardcore music show: slam dancing, crowd killing, and caveman riffs galore. Mosaics aims to bring the same energy to the listener as one might experience at one of these shows, and they accomplished that feat with flying colors in their new single “Gaslighter (Venom)”.

Gaslighter wastes no time bringing the slam - it begins with a groovy and dissonant riff that borders on being a breakdown. Mosaics classifies themselves as a melodic hardcore band, and this is clearly evident fromt he get-go in their sound. They do a fantastic job of blending atmospheric elements with a djenty and downright nasty rhythm to create an audible experience that’ll leave you crowdkilling your house or apartment in no time.

Gaslighter contains heavy substance behind the riffage, painting a picture of the damage left by an abusive and manipulative person. The verbiage used in the lyrics is heavier than the instrumental, surprisingly - “Now I live with the weight of three words circling through my brain, “You were right” cut the track marks burning through my veins”. These words ring out during a melodic and open break leading into the crushing breakdown that offered a more uplifting and self-motivating message: “I’ve earned the right to stand up for me after months of silencing my voice. I’ll not hear a word of your blaming me for the hell you’ve made.”

Gaslighter is a connective song from top to bottom: the substantial lyrics illustrate a personal issue that’s been hard to deal with for many, standing up to a manipulative and emotionally abusive person after the last straw has been met. This message is only amplified by the downright dirty hardcore grooves of the instrumental. This southern Alabama project is certainly one to keep an ear and eye out for, as they’ll be ripping open pits far and wide once shows are a regular institution again.
