Fluorescents embodies the essence of pop punk and easy core with “T.A.S.T.”

Written by JD Walker

What’s more pop-punk than skateboarding, jamming in a small room, and rolling around the town with your friends? Not a damn thing, that’s what. Fluorescents gave an authentic and unique interpretation of the popular genre with their newest single and music video, T.A.S.T.

T.A.S.T. begins with the band in a neon-illuminated room and an excellent vocal hook from lead vocalist and bassist, Bobby Guidi. The song quickly kicks in with a chiming lead over a catchy and unique four-chord riff from guitarists Tyler Milka and Sasquel Roby Exum, complemented by a driving beat from drummer Alex Klump. Their upbeat riffs are accompanied by the neon-lit wall adorned with Chicago sports teams - The Blackhawks, Bears, and Cubs (but not the White Sox, and rightfully so).

The video was equally as charismatic as the song - it very much had a DIY-vibe which fit with the song perfectly. The band engaged in antics all across town while Guidi shreds on his skateboard, cutting back to scenes of the band rocking out. The mix on the song was fantastic, and between the song and video it shows that the band are skilled musicians while not taking themselves too seriously and just having fun - at the end of the day, that’s what music is all about.

Their songwriting skills were captivating to say the least - T.A.S.T. is filled with catching melodies, driving rhythms, tempo changes, and just a dash of shred. T.A.S.T. is an impressive addition to an already illustrious catalogue for the band - the group had previously worked with Seb Barlow of Neck Deep on a previous release and has a number of singles available to listen to.

Pop-punk tends to get a bad rap as an oversaturated genre, but Fluorescents have found a way to make their sound unique and truly stand out. If you’re a fan of Neck Deep, The Story So Far, or more classic acts such as Blink-182 and Fall Out Boy, Fluorescents is a band that’s rightfully earned a spot on your jam list.
