Mighty Tortuga paints a dreamy soundscape with “Reverie”

Written by JD Walker

What do you get when you mix the sound of emo rock, happy vibes, and a trippy music video? You get Mighty Tortuga, of course. The 4-piece group, consisting of TJ Redding on vocals, Jameson Stock on drums, and the guitar/bass duo of Amar Lapastica and Jacob Berberich, hails from the small New England state of Connecticut. The band has an impressive resume, being touted as one of Buzz Music’s top 10 artists of 2019. They carried that momentum into 2020 with their newest single, “Reverie”.

“Reverie” wastes no time kicking into the song. It opens immediately with a smile-inducing melody that’ll leave you bobbing your head and grinning ear from ear. The video offers trippy visuals, including that of the bandmates characterized as drawings while playing. Redding dons an acoustic guitar as he delivers the smooth verse going into a soaring chorus, and the band keeps it tight with their punchy delivery.

The group isn’t afraid to dip into their heavier side as the post-chorus swells and crescendos into a bass and drum break. The vocal mix was absolutely stellar - they did a great job of layering different atmospheric vocal deliveries during the break to create an overall positive and dreamy soundscape. The songwriting as  whole is very solid and the band clearly has honed their craft and knows how to deliver the sound in their heads.

Mighty Tortuga may sound like a band that you’d want to check out for the name alone, but once you hear their music you’ll be hooked. They create a wonderful and uplifting sound that’ll leave you with a smile on your face and a foot firmly tapping to the beat. They’re clearly very talented songwriters and are a must have on any summer jam or “happy vibes” playlist. If you’re inclined to pop-punk, alternative rock, or dream pop, this band is all three sounds combined and then some. If you’re looking for a group of independent musicians that values their community and their craft, look no further than Mighty Tortuga.
