SONG REVIEW: Troy Ray - "Bad"

“Troy Ray’s debut song is anything but BAD”

by Jesse Smith

Tough Luck Music is at it again! We’ve been seeing a lot of movement and amazing music coming from this new up and coming label and they’re adding another incredible artist to the roster. Troy Ray is a new R’n’B/pop artist that has his sights set north and it’s only going to be up from here. Troy has been a part of the scene for a LONG time playing in the New England based band A Faylene Sky back around 2010-13 era. He was an incredible vocalist then, and now he is just taking his talent to new heights.

“Bad” is anything but, coming out the gate with a well written and infectious hook. “I always thought that we can make it work” is that first line and how he delivers it immediately itched a scratch in my brain. His soulful tone and soothing voice paired with well written lyrics is the formula for success. The one thing I’ve always been a fan of with Troy, is how his lyrics flow and perfectly fits the music. From back to front this debut single is a vibe and a song you can get lost in. While the music is the basis to let his vocals come through and lead does not mean all the subtle backing vocals and synth patches go unnoticed. The synth in the back of the chorus and part of the verse drives the melody and compliments his voice perfectly giving the song a lot more depth.

Yet another debut single that is all gas and no brakes. It’s not the first time an incredible vocalist turned to pop and RnB. This song reminds me of Jonny Craig’s solo project mixed with Riley. Troy Ray deserves to be in the conversation with those titans only after one song. Troy Ray should have your attention and I can not wait to see what is next.
