SONG REVIEW: From This Day Forward - "Friday (Rebecca Black Cover)"

“A crazy throwback cover but it isn’t even Thursday, It’s Friday”

by Jesse Smith

As the Rawring 20’s continue to bless us with one surprise after the next, we were due for something that is in reality is new, but feels all too familiar. Making noise from Omaha NE, the band From This Day Forward just dropped a brilliant throwback cover and it is one we didn’t know we needed, but man… did it give me memories. If you were in highschool 11 years ago you would remember a silly little song that went extremely viral for multiple reasons called “Friday”. The song by Rebecca Black (no relation to Andy Black) took the internet and snapped it over its knee. For months you could not escape this song no matter how hard you tried. Well, in true pop goes punk fashion, It is back and we have 5 dudes from Nebraska to thank, and you know what? They crush it.

As I pressed play to listen to this cover for the first time, I quickly realized what I was getting into. I saw the title say Friday but in no way was I prepared for THAT Friday. As soon as it started I couldn’t believe this was released in 2023 because it has the spirit of 2012. The song starts with an electronic intro but not something menacing and heavy, something more up beat and light. Even this synth tone was perfect for replicating the time that YouTube was TikTok. As the band kicks in, it starts off really light, reiterating the vibe of the synth intro, but as they get into verse one, the guitars crunch a little more and synced up with the kick drum patterns giving that classic metalcore sound. Alas, we are on our way, the vocals are delivered almost exactly how Rebecca Black did in the original. It wasn’t monotoned, but it was centered around 1 note which is exactly how it was delivered in the original. They bounce back between singing and screaming, the chorus being bubblegum and pop while the verse having a little more edge. My absolute favorite part was the first breakdown we get. Built up just right and when it did drop it was exactly what I wanted to hear.

If the words “Calvary Kids” mean anything to you, you will absolutely eat this cover up. This is truly a fun listen even if you are late to this Friday party, you will pick up on the vibe really quick. Growing up in this era of the internet, my heart is happy and they did the song justice. This track also features Everbloom which you can see in the Music Video that they also dropped with this track. The only critique I have about the whole thing, I wish they had a convertible shot in the music video with someone's hands being a dolphin.
