SONG REVIEW: Paperweight - "Lemon Spiders"
“Finally something refreshing in Pop Punk”
by Jesse Smith
Australia is known for a few things; Big ass spiders, Kangaroos, the use of the “c” word, and really really good music. The amount of talent that comes out of Australia is insane, so when I heard this band was based out of Melbourne I immediately knew it was going to bang. Paperweight is a pandemic baby band that has skipped crawling and walking and went straight to running. Having been consistently putting out music since 2020, Paperweight has been making huge waves in the Australian music scene. Having some similarities to legacy bands like Neck Deep and New Found Glory, the band has developed their own sound in a very oversaturated genre. With the release of the new track “Lemon Spiders” The band really raised the bar they have already been setting for themselves.
When you think pop punk you either think super happy and peppy or super depressing. Lemon Spiders starts off the song with the main chorus riff that has more of an “in your face” rock vibe. The aggression of the song from the start is a sweet taste of something new. Keeping the pop punk high energy the whole song but it just feels different. The vocal performance by vocalist Haris Dillinger really sets the tone of the track, delivering a very versatile range that is super easy to sing along with. Having the upbeat drum beat for the chorus took the song to the next level and is going to make this a fan favorite, making it almost impossible for you to stand still. This release also has a music video and really shows the authentic style and energy of the band and the individual members.
“Lemon Spiders” is a super catchy and solid track and honestly it’s my favorite song the band has put out. Showcasing their ability to be different and bringing more rock influences which really sets them apart. This September the band is hitting the road in Aus with a MASSIVE lineup of State Champs and The Maine. If you are going to any of those shows, go early and catch Paperweight, they are about to blow up.
