SONG REVIEW: Heathensun - "Gang (Feat. Dropout Kings)"

“If you’re stoked on the Limp Bizkit come back, you’ll be stoked to find Heathensun”

by Jesse Smith

I’m starting to think that Nu-Metal is as American as football on Sundays and Apple Pie. With the new wave of Nu-Metal (and what I call “Nu-Metalcore”) bands popping off in 2022 I did some deep diving and realized, all of the top Nu-Metal bands are all American made. This fact is still true when  we bring up the band Heathensun. Heathensun is majority based out of the Carolinas and these guys stay true to the original sound of Nu Metal. For being another Pandemic baby band, Heathensun has SKYROCKETED in the short amount of time this band has had. Racking up over 100k on Instagram and over 11k on Spotify, Heathensun is becoming a force in the scene. But today we’re diving into their newest title track, “Gang”.

“Gang” is a straight up vibe, plain and simple. From start to finish the song is simple when it comes to the music, but that is for good reason. Heathensun is framed around being brutal, being groovy, and a sick flow. “Gang” is super headbangable which instantly is good for Nu Metal crowds. The main ear catch is the vocal flow. Similar to the rapping of Fred Durst, “Gang” is hard but without harsh vocals. Having a groovy and heavy main riff paired with a unique vocalist definitely makes a good song but the feature is just the cherry on top of the whipped cream. New Wave Nu-Metal titans Dropout Kings are also on this song which honestly was the perfect fit and shocked me on how the feature was done. You know exactly when they come in but it sounds separate from any Dropout Kings music. It 100% heightened the song without making it about the feature.

Overall, if you’re a Nu Metal fan, you’re a Heathensun fan. With the new wave of Nu Metal, Heathensun is one of the ones who resemble the first wave back in the 90’s. Judging from their numbers and socials, the band hit the ground and sprinted like a cartoon character. With 2 albums already under their belt with no “official” single releases Heathensun is doing the damn thing their own way and that is what is pretty sick about them. I’m a fan.
