SONG REVIEW: Rune - "Your Hate"

“An emotionally charged song with the theme of empowerment”

by Jesse Smith

The band Rune has just recently emerged in the Southern Florida music scene. The modern alternative rock 4 piece that dashes alittle metalcore influences in the mix have just released their debut single titled “Your Hate”. An emotionally charged song with the theme of empowerment, Rune’s message is loud and clear about using life’s negativity and turning into fuel to prove your haters wrong, something all of us can really relate to.

The song is emotionally engaging before the vocals even come in. Giving that feeling of perseverance, the music captures the overall vibe of the lyrics. The verses are stripped down to only a back beat, piano chords and the most motivating vocal performance sung by vocalist Xavier Mejia. Lyrics like “your hate is my way out” and “don’t need your love yo rise above” hammers on the overall message of using other people's negativity as a reminder to keep going. We have all felt like we had something to prove to our doubters, so this song really does hit home. Being a pretty straightforward alternative rock song, up until the little breakdown the band added, which was a pleasant and refreshing surprise the first time I heard it.

“Your Hate” is the perfect song to listen to when you feel down and out. This is the song I would listen to on the walks I take to regroup and collect my thoughts. Having an empowering song is like having a pep talk in your pocket and sometimes you just need to listen. As a first single ever, this band really has skipped a couple levels and came out swinging for the fences. I’m really enjoying the direction this band is going and it’s something I could 100% hear on Octane. Rune is headed in the right direction and if they stay making music like this, I think they will soon be a staple name.
