“The Foundation Of My Decay” is out, and it’s got the world on fire already and it’s been barely an hour since its release at the time of this writing. The year is 2022 and My Chemical Romance has released a brand new song, if that isn’t the injection of life the scene revival needed then I don’t know what is, the masters of mid 00s post hardcore scene return to form with a darkness and brooding nature on a very melancholy track that lures you in, the video on youtube appearing to be a collection of insects piled upon each other as a glimmering light showers their pulsating rhythms as they slowly crawl to life as the song slowly stirs. It’s a subdued track, no high energy punk esque drums or Iron Maiden / Queen styled solos bring you into this track that feels more like a spirit reentering our realm, making itself comfortable.
You have to wonder if this is going to be used in a title sequence for the upcoming season of Umbrella Academy because the tracks sound seems more cinematic than anything the band has done outside of their Black Parade album which felt more like a stage play displaying angst and inner turmoil than a scene from a pulp noir drama. It seems like My Chemical Romance is digging deeper into the archives of rock n roll and music from the 60s and early 70s, with the bright yet distraught guitars and Gerard Way’s usually roaring Billy Corgan whimper sounding more like The Turtles or Three Dog Night in the ghost visage like verses where Gerard seems to hide behind the gloomy wall of sound they’ve created where he comes in roaring for the chorus sections, not angry, but a commanding presence in his vocals as beseeches you to listen to his every crooning word of sorrow.
The bridge like breakdown feeling like Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir than a traditional post hardcore breakdown, these are all attention seeking methods to draw comparisons to how deep these well versed musicians are reaching. If you’ve followed The Umbrella Academy, Gerard Way has no qualms about flexing how far back his musical knowledge reaches. If you were to look at early day MCR influences, you realize they respected a vast wealth of time through Ray Toro, Frank Iero and Mikey Way all bringing their own adoration for their influences proudly on their sleeve. It’s something the modern age of musician could take solace that your influences speak volumes as your development as a musician.
“The Foundation Of My Decay” totally picks up where My Chemical Romance left us with Conventional Weapons and their greatest hits record, leaving us wanting more but instead of goodbye, this is a soft somber hello that roars the band is here to stay and the scene should take notice, they’re taking over whether you want it or not, with all the confidence rockstars of their stature have earned and garnered with a mastery few can rival in the current climate. To put into perspective how powerful this return is, on youtube the video has been up an hour, has 11k views, with 47k Likes, the video can’t keep track of the views and the likes keep sky rocketing. This is a moment the whole scene can take a step back and breathe a sigh of relief, the kings of the scene have returned
