Beyond The Ocean channels the classic melodic metalcore sound for an instant classic in “The Revenge”

Written by JD Walker

In the hearts and minds of metalcore fans everywhere, there’s a certain balance of melodic ambiance and riffage with downright brutal breakdowns that makes for a perfect song. If Beyond The Ocean haven’t nailed that formula perfectly, they’ve come damn close. Their new single “The Revenge” pairs soaring vocals and ambient delay-driven melodies with crushing, classic sounding riffs for an overall brilliantly composed single.

The song wastes no time in tickling the listener’s tympanic membrane - it fades in with the sound of a vinyl record being started up before kicking immediately into a catchy chorus. Vocalist Etienne Weckes provides soaring hooks with brutal fry screams to compliment the melodic prowess of guitarist Nils Jäger. The introductory chorus is followed by a brutal verse punctuated by the rhythmic cohesion of bassist Chris Ickler and drummer Daniel Dobrick.

Beyond The Ocean has a LOT of great tones and influences working for them - many of the delivery styles are reminiscent of classic Famous Last Words or Killswitch Engage and their use of alternative sounds are plentiful in this banger. The first breakdown catches the listener by surprise and immediately switches the melodic catchy song to a jarring headbanger of a tune. The song is capped off with a dubstep breakdown full of wubs, dubs, and everything in between.

If Beyond The Ocean played baseball, they’d be a five-tool player; they have songwriting talent, proficiency with their instruments, a professional look, solid branding, and are destined for a long road of success on the world stage. The German quartet has only been around for 2 years which is frightening to think about - if they’re producing music of such high quality this early on in their careers, what does the future hold for them? Nothing but greatness from the sound of it, and it’ll certainly be exciting to hear their evolution in future releases
