Living In False Eyes tears open an interdimensional hole with “C-137”

Written by JD Walker

Every now and again, you’ll hear a song that catches you off guard. You’re not ready for how quickly it kicks in and gets down to business and almost have to take a second and recompose yourself before continuing to listen. Living in False Eyes have just dropped an absolute nuke of a single with “C-137”. Nothing is djentier than extended range guitars, space, and polyrhythms, and Living in False Eyes follows this formula perfectly.

The song begins with a spacey, ambient synthesizer before slamming the listener straight in the face. The heavy chugs, delivered by guitarists Steven Andrews and Jeff Carel, are polyrhythmic in nature and do a great job of syncopating upbeats and downbeats. The groove is both complemented and amplified by the rhythm section of Cory Bingham on drums and Val Harris on bass, and the four instrumentalists sound as tight as could be.

The jarring vocals are delivered by the aptly named Kaos Morrison, and both his tone and lyricism are striking and truly chaotic. Morrison compliments the band perfectly by following the syncopated cadence of the band and adding a particularly brutal edge to the song. Ryan Kirby of Fit For a King made an appearance in the song and finished the job that Morrsion started by crushing the listener’s eardrums with his classic delivery. The lyrics have references sprinkled in from the popular adult animation “Rick and Morty”, calling back to the classic Mr. Meseeks tagline “existence is pain” and sharing a name with the home dimension of the mad scientist and his hapless grandson.

There’s nothing more soothing to the ears than some good ol’ fashioned dj0nt. Living in False Eyes are sure to please heavy music aficionados around the world with “C-137” and leave their heads in a perpetual headbang. The references in the lyrics are just subtle enough to not notice in passing but make for an awesome easter egg with a more thorough listen. Above all else, “C-137” goes hard. In bird culture, “C-137” is considered an absolute banger.
