SINGLE REVIEW: Allies Always Lie - "R.I.P."
Allies Always Lie show just how brutal laser tag can be in “RIP”
Written by JD Walker
The juxtaposition of a heavy song with a silly video is underappreciated, and quite frankly underutilized. Those types of songs always tend to be memorable, fan favorites, and are almost always certified bangers. Allies Always Lie are no exception to this trend with their latest effort, “RIP”.
“RIP” begins with an infectious and bouncy riff from Ihan Wessman to start the song before the drums lead in the whole band with attitude. The proverbial ‘money riff’ finds its way into the song multiple times, becoming a staple of the tune and leaving the listener begging for more each time. Drummer Nicklaus Johnstun has excellent taste in chops and upbeat fills, drawing a similar approach to someone like Luke Holland that utilizes a plethora of linear patterns and gospel chops. Bassist Kyler Matthews kept the groove with precision and ensured that the intricate chug patterns retained a healthy amount of weight and power. Vocalist Justin Castrillo displayed a wide range of high pitched vocal frys and jarring gutturals with excellent layer for an absolutely insane sound.
“RIP” stands alone as an epic song, but the video takes it to an entirely different level. It really dives deep into the brutal reality of... laser tag? Yes, laser tag. The video captures the most epic match of laser tag known to mankind, complete with quick scopes, tactical proficiency, and even a curb stomp. The entire video bares the familiar sights of a childhood arcade, with Wessman shredding atop skeeball machines, Johnston grooving in front of giant stuffed animals, Matthews donning a pair of VR goggles, and Castrillo being helplessly trapped in a claw machine. The video was a beautiful work of art visually but also captures the essence of what it means to be a metalcore band - write ripping tunes but remember to have fun doing it.
“RIP” is nothing but enjoyable for the listener and the band alike. Between the nasty riffage and the harsh reality of laser tag warfare, Allies Always Lie have created an instant classic and fan favorite. The song carries energy from start to finish and the video carries a humorous approach to the sense of nostalgia associated with the arcade. “RIP” is a banger with something a little more special behind it, and the band probably had a blast (pun slightly intended) through the whole process.
