SONG REVIEW: Patient Sixty-Seven - "Mares Nest"
“The heaviest and darkest Patient Sixty-Seven has ever sounded”
by Jesse Smith
Patient Sixty-Seven has become a household name not only here on Ghost Killer Entertainment, but in the “core” music scene for the last couple of years. Growing insanely over their career and it just keeps rising. The band from Perth is now back and darker than ever with their new song “Mare’s Nest”. The band is known for having a nostalgic metalcore vibe with high production and superior song writing, and that still holds incredibly true today. If you’re a fan of the mid 2010’s heavy metalcore that’s dropped tuned yet still has singalong parts, this one's for you. Grab your all black attire and your vans, we’re going moshing.
Mare’s Nest kicks off with a crushing lead with an even more crushing rhythm. Having a heavy yet jumpy chug pattern over a lightning lead kicks you in the face like the scary guy in the mosh pit. The vibe shifts when the first verse starts from heavy and shreddy to overall aggressive and in your face. The guitar tones used in this song are bone crushing and hit you in the gut. Heavy low end but cuts through the mix which makes the impact that much larger. As for the chorus sections of this song, it does not take away from the heaviness at all, better yet it feels right. Sometimes in metalcore, the line between pop and metal gets skewed too hard one way in parts of the song and it sounds like a formula rather than a song written for a purpose, but not this time. Even with the catchy chorus, the song is still grabbing you and throwing you around. The other thing worth pointing out is the vocal layering. The mix of highs and lows makes it sound so much darker and way more demon-like, and this happens for a big majority of the song.
The talent of this band shows why they are where they are, and if we’re being honest I think they are in the underrated category of the scene. Having only a couple tours under their belt, with songs like these, the buzz should be A LOT bigger than what it is. So much so, they should be on major festivals and on everyone’s radar. P67 has an old school vibe with a fresh face and they do it the exact right way. 10/10 song for a 10/10 band.
