SONG REVIEW: Never Bothered To Bloom - "Folie á Deux"

An intense and powerful performance by a brand new electronic duo”

by Jesse Smith

The alternative music scene and electronic music has always run hand in hand, so finding a new electronic project with roots in the alternative music scene is no surprise. What is a surprise though is how good this particular project is and is going to be given this is only single #1. Never Bothered To Bloom consists of Matt Tybor and Brooke Tybor, a husband and wife duo based out of Florida. You may have heard of Matt’s other project called “The Bunny The Bear” and if you know him from that like I do, Never Bothered To Bloom is going to come as a shock to you … or maybe not! Let’s dive into their debut single “Folie á Deux”.

First off, if you like ambient vibey electronic music, you are going to fall in love with this song. The first 20 seconds of the song really sets the mood for me. Setting the vibe while still creating so much room which creates anticipation for how the song will really kick in and when. As the song kicks in, the first thing that stands out is how perfect Brooke’s voice fits this genre. Her vocal performance mixed with the production really creates a very open atmospheric sound, like you’re floating through space. If you’re a TBTB fan, Matt’s vocal performance is super similar to what you hear in the more processed TBTB tracks. Being that The Bunny The Bear in itself is an electronic metal band, i was ready to hear a lot of similarities but I was positively surprised when it sounded nothing like them, only when Matt’s yelling style of vocals kicked in post chorus. It was a nice tip of the cap to the fans of that project who found their way over here. Even so, that wasn’t even my favorite part of the song and to be honest the strongest part. While keeping the same beat and tempo, the chorus is incredible. As Brooke kicks up her performance and really starts to lean into it, the song becomes more intense and powerful. While keeping the same atmosphere of the song, the chorus stands out over all the rest and is the reason I have listened to it over and over again.

“Folie á Deux” is the nighttime smoke song. The song you play on that beautiful starry night drive home where no one is on the road and you just want to get lost. As far as ambient electronic music goes, this is as good as any. The most important part is that it makes you feel something. Everytime I listen to this song, I really get sucked into the vibe of the song and it’s soothing yet exciting. This being their first single, it’s a home run. I already want another song and this just came out.
