“Good ole’ fashion Death Metal”
by Jesse James Smith
When I say I like and listen to anything or everything I truly mean it. We all know that person that says they do, but you know you could prove them wrong. From Pop to Death Metal, if it’s good I’m a fan. Today we’re talking about the far end of that spectrum which is Good ole’ fashioned Death Metal. Morgue Terror is a Death Metal band from Buffalo, New York which is sacred in itself. Being a death metal band from the birthplace of one of the best, if not the best death metal bands ever (Cannibal Corpse), you know the pressure is on. Well this band has been stepping up to the plate and delivering some heat! Forming only last year, they already have 2 EP’s out. Today I’m talking about the single from their newest EP ‘Violent and Murderous Thoughts’ called ‘Neanderthal’
Before I listened to the song I read the lyrics. They popped up in front of me and seeing the length I got curious. Death Metal has always been known for its colorful, yet poetic vocabulary, but with a song called Neanderthal, it was right on point. Not very long, maybe 4 verses. In most cases It would have been weird, but I got excited to listen because I knew it was going to slam, and slam it did. The song started heavy and hard. The simplicity of the riff and drums together really gave that primal feeling. This song was a rollercoaster in tempo going up and down, slow and fast which kept it interesting and easy to follow along. The guitar riffs reminded me a lot of Obituary, Where it was very Metal sounding and Slam-y. This song also has a really dope feature, Chaney Crabb from Entheos was a sick addition to this song. It was also a feature that stood out because you don’t hear about her a lot and she is SUPER sick.
If you’re a newer deathcore fan in 2024, I don’t know if you’ll like or understand Death Metal. Deathcore used to be HATED in that community when it was first starting but you could hear a lot more Death Metal influences in early deathcore. When I listen to Death Metal, I almost get a feeling that we can all say unanimously that this is METAL, like there is no doubt about it. Something about it just feels like the rawest form of metal and that’s honestly why I like it so much, and Mogue Terror is on the money with it. Being a newer band, you still need to really find your sound and identity, but so far, I like what I’m hearing.
