SONG REVIEW: Mike Shinoda & Kailee Morgue - "In My Head" (from Scream VI)
Written by Jesse Smith
The alternative music scene has pretty much exploded when juggernauts Linkin Park released a B-Track that was supposed to be on Meteora. Linkin Park was one of the bands that I would bet 85% of your favorite artists listened to and was directly influenced by. Mike Shinoda (the guy who raps in LP) is also a HIGHLY successful solo artist and producer. Recently, he released the slam dunk single “In My Head” featuring a GKE favorite Kaliee Morgue. Just as if the song couldn’t get any cooler, it is on the Scream 6 soundtrack, so all you fellow horror lovers this a 2 for 1 special is greatness. With these two artist on one track, you know for a fact it is a hit without even hearing it.
In My Head starts pretty quick going from intro to verse 1 in 15 seconds. The intro starts with the melody played on keys just enough to get it in your head almost like a tease before it hits the heavy pop beat. I say heavy pop because that’s exactly what it is, not trap, not EDM per say, but it sounds like a beat that could be the base of a katy perry or pink banger. Both of these vocalist have such distinct voices that it’s like two icons of alt coming together. Kaliee brings such a unique dynamic to the mix and elevates the song to another level, her voice mixed with Mike’s is like a mixture of Fergy and Jesus (IYKYK). But for real, their voices together compliment and blend so well as if they should be in a project together, and I don’t think anyone else would have sounded better together. If you’re reference of Mike Shinoda is mostly Linkin Park, you know he mostly does the rapping but in this he really shows his pipes and sings along side kailee’s angelic voice. There is however, a point in the second chorus where the chorus extends and I may get hate for this and told I’m wrong…. But to me it sounded like Chester. Right then and there I realized this what LP in 2023 would be collabing with a rising star, and I am 100000% here for it.
The song seems like a short listen and is so good that it is easy to let it repeat like a tiktok. My overall thoughts are this song is gold, and clearly was made to be in a movie soundtrack but a banging soundtrack that has chart topping singles on it. We have worked with Kailee and her team before so I knew how good she was but this is top tier and if you didn’t know who she was before you do now. If you’re gonna check her out, she has another new single titled “End Of My Life” which has a music video that also has a horror theme, seems fitting that that be the next thing you check out.
