SONG REVIEW: Chidori - "Ocean Consumes Vessels"
New bands that have little hints of 2010 scene post hardcore in their music definitely make me smile. But the bands that make me wish I had my old neon monster tees back are on a completely different level. The Post-Hardcore band, Chidori from Atlanta has transported me back to a time where music was exciting for me. I have never heard of this band before listening to their newest single “Ocean Consumes Vessels” which immediately should have braced me for what I was about to hear.
Instantly I was captivated by the synth intro. It was spot on to the nastolgic style of post hardcore they are going for, and suddenly the music kicks in. Chaotic but tight, I wasn’t prepared to be blown away like this so I had to start it over. I have often wondered if music that made an impact would sound good in today's production capabilities, Chidori has proved that yes it can. The quality of this track is top tier which I can not stress enough how important that is. Ocean Consumes Vessels is a chaotic masterpiece, not super mathy like swancore bands and super palatable. While the song is mostly screaming, the clean vocals are not cliche at all. Keeping the clean singing lower in register which creates a very atmospheric vibe mixed with the clean vocals and the overall melody. While there are no crazy stand alone heavy parts, this song will definitely scratch an itch for any heavier progressive fan as well as fans of post hardcore.
Chidori has picked up exactly where Sky Eats Airplanes left off. And with an influx of early scene bands reviving, this is the perfect time to bring something fresh and new to the table. They would be PERFECT support for a I Set My Friends On Fire tour and that is a show I would instantly pay to see. “Ocean Consumes Vessels” is a certified smash for me and a huge step up from their previous EP. If Chidori keeps bringing songs like this to the table, sky's the limit!
