SONG REVIEW: Calebjustcaleb x Aim High - "DELETETHISRNBBY”
An infectious listen from Calebjustcaleb x Aim High with their collab song, "DELETETHISRNBBY”
by Jesse Smith
Emo rap and RnB have been entangled in our world for a very long time, and it just keeps getting more and more intertwined. Artist like Jonny Craig, Riley, and Chase Atlantic are the prime examples of people who have an Identity in the alternative world doing something like RnB. There is another name to add to this list and it’s an up and coming artist from South Carolina. Calebjustcaleb is an incredibly talented singer/songwriter that started dropping freestyles and mixtapes tracing back to 2016. But it’s just been in the last couple of years that he really has dialed in his sound. He’s back with a new song that also features the pop punk project, Aim High called “DELETETHISRNBBY”.
This track is a short listen coming in under 2 minutes but it doesn’t disappoint at all! The song starts off with an acoustic guitar riff that has a similar vibe to the dababy song “rockstar”. Quickly though, it jumps into the main hook that is so catchy and well executed that it hooks you In immediately. I’ve known Calebjustcaleb to be really innovative with how he works his influences in with his music, so instead of feeling like “this sounds like…” it’s more of a “this would be good on a playlist with…”. The hook’s beat is pretty hard as well, very bass driven and heavy for the style. The verse is more rapped and that’s where his emo rap roots really shine. Since this is split with Aim High, we do get some band love, the verse has a real drum beat backing it that does a great job in adding a more edgy atmosphere. The thing that stands out the most is his singing voice, the chorus is so catchy and it’s because of his voice and delivery. Like a Jonny Craig, Calebjustcaleb knows just the right flair to make it really pop and not just monotonous.
For a short listen, this son packs a hell of a punch and passes all of the vibe checks. Calebjustcaleb is a brilliant singer and songwriter and the backing band definitely was a smart move. This song is a single off of a split EP between him and Aim High, so you’ll get both sides of him, one more pop punk and one RnB. I don’t know about you, but that is going to be on my radar for Top 10 EP’s of the year.
