BAND INTERVIEW: Sight Received
Interview Conducted by Jesse Smith
Sight Received is an up and coming Metalcore act from Washington state. For the last couple of years they have been creating a huge buzz not only in their local scene, but the Northwest area of the US. Recently, the band kicked off 2024 by releasing their newest single “The Enemy” Which absolutely bangs and checks every box for a solid metalcore track. With this release, we got an early sneak peak at the track (before it was released) and got to have them answer a few questions for us here at GKE!
Hey what’s up guys! Pleasure to have you guys answer some questions for us! First off, How did you guys come together? What is your origin story?
Thank you. We’re happy to make this happen. My name is Kristian and I’m the frontman. The idea of the band started about 8 years ago or so but we didn’t really get things going til around 2018 I’d say. The pandemic was obviously a big hurdle but during that was when we started releasing music since it gave us a lot of time to focus on that side of things.
You guys pump out A LOT of jams, your first release on Spotify was a full length album, followed by a couple EP’s and covers. Do you write and record all yourselves or do you go to someone to produce?
Yeah all our songs are written by us, besides those couple cover songs we did. It mainly consists of me getting a song written out before I bring it to the rest of the band, then certain parts get ironed out as everyone starts learning it. We’ve pretty much self produced everything as well. It’s something we’ve been getting better at as we go on. I think we’re at a great stride with writing and producing our music and I think our future releases we’ll be doing will prove that.
Speaking of releasing music, You kicked off the new year with a fresh new single titled “The Enemy”. What was the song’s main inspirations both lyrically and musically?
I think overall The Enemy really showcases every piece of our band. I think it’s gonna be the ‘go to’ track for people. I’ve always been a huge fan of punchy and catchy guitar riffs. I felt the main riff to that is on the same level of catchiness as the chorus. The song as a whole is a good mix of modern metal likeness like Memphis May Fire but also sounds like a callback to some of the more 2000s hard rock bands like Chevelle. Lyrically, it’s basically about seeing someone you really care about self destruct their life away and realizing there’s nothing you can do to make them change. I had a few people in my life on my mind while writing the song and it’s unfortunate how common that is.
Will ‘The Enemy’ be apart of an upcoming EP or Album? Or will it stand alone as a single?
We’re gonna do another EP with it included. We’ve got one other song fully mastered, and we have two other songs that need finished tracking. I’m hoping we can get both those finished this month but we may cut one and add it to our next batch of releases. We’ll see though.
You guys play shows around Washington often. What was your favorite show you’ve ever played and what was the worst? If you can’t pinpoint just one that stands out you can list 2 or 3.
The worst show is an easy one haha. We played in Seattle right before the pandemic started. Our whole set was a huge mess from technical issues, to some of us playing the wrong song at the same time. It was awful but the best/worst part was when we were about finished, I saw this old lady in the back (which I’m not sure who she was there for haha) staring at me and shaking her head in the most 'disappointed grandma’ look you can think of. Thankfully we’ve had plenty of amazing shows with a packed out place and everyone super engaged. We’ve been truly thankful for all the people who’ve been active in our ventures.
As a band, who are your biggest influences? Everyone in the band probably has different personal influences, but who is the one that everyone agrees on and that’s the base of the band’s sound.
I feel like I’m always being influenced whether from old bands to new ones. I grew up on a lot of more hard rock stuff like Chevelle, Shinedown, Seether, and Breaking Benjamin. I think some of our older songs encapsulates those bands a lot. In more recent years, I’ve taken a big liking to bands like Beartooth, I Prevail, Fit for a King, and Ice Nine Kills. I think for anyone who digs those kinds of bands would be into us.
To end, I like to ask some not serious/fun questions for whoever is reading. Switch it up and make it fun to read! So first, In your opinion, what is the ultimate post-show meal?
Oh man, I gotta go with any legit taco truck. You can’t beat those portions and it’s impossible to get something you don’t like. Plus it’s good food to make you wanna go to sleep which is exactly what I wanna do after we finish a show haha.
Since we are all lovers of music, What is one show or festival that you wish you could go back and relive all over again?
I’m not sure of a festival or show I’d wanna relive but one I wish I got to go to is Warped Tour. Surprisingly I never attended one because I always found it more worth it to wait for my favorite bands to come through on an actual tour but now that Warped Tour is gone, I definitely feel I missed out. Here’s hoping someone resurrects it.
Final question.. For one million dollars (not really)... Who is your favorite NON SCENE artist to listen to? No pop punk, no alternative rock, or anyone that has something to do with the scene.
Post Malone is someone who comes to mind. He’s got some trickles of rock in some of his music but I keep waiting for him to do a real rock album. I think it’d sound amazing. Hardy is someone who the scene keeps rejecting even though he has a lot of rock stuff out at this point haha. If I really kept true to the rules though, I gotta go with Tim McGraw. He’s one of the most consistently great country musicians. He’s great to do karaoke also haha.
Thank you guys so much for taking the time to answer some questions for us here at GKE! After an amazing new year release, do you anything you would like to plug or say to the fans?
We hope everyone enjoys the music video. This year is gonna have a lot of “firsts” in it and we can’t wait to share more. Thank you for making this interview happen and thank you everyone for giving us your time with reading it.
You can now stream ‘The Enemy’ now on all platforms! These guys are definitely on the right path and are killing it right now! This was a great way to start the new year as a metalcore fan, finding a new band that I can add to my playlist!
