ARTIST INTERVIEW: "Kailee Morgue"
Written / Interviewed by Jesse Smith
Kailee Morgue has been a force to be reckoned with in the music industry since 2017. Her Pop-Rock sound mixed her love of 90’s and early 2000’s pop stars, Kailee had made a statement to be different with her “New Nostalgic” sound. Racking up over 1 million monthly Spotify monthly listeners as well as millions of streams, Kaliee is constantly releasing music on a regular basis and is gearing up to drop her highly anticipated debut album “Girl Next Door”. On the verge of this release, we were honored to be able to ask her a few of your burning questions!
Hey Kailee! Thank you for answering some questions for us! Is Kailee Morgue your stage name? If so, how did you come up with it? If not, I think you have the coolest last name in existence.
It is! My real name is actually Kailee Moore! When I was 18 I wanted my stage name to be Morgue and I had found out someone already has that name so I just made it my last name but I’m really glad I did!
You have been releasing music since 2017, How would you say your music has evolved and what inspired your evolution?
I think in 2017 I was very much experimenting and trying to please everyone with how I made music, I don’t think I fully knew who I was or what I wanted. I’ve definitely come into my own since then and I’m able to blend what I like with what I think my fans would connect with!
Some of the songs you’ve written like “STFU” you say some of the quiet parts out loud. How did you get the confidence to write songs like that and have the attitude you do?
A lot of my angrier songs are just channeling that energy into a song so I can say things I’m not really supposed to say out loud, it’s really cathartic! I think sometimes I use songwriting as a digital diary.
Like i said previously, you've been releasing music for a minute now, when did you start working with Thriller Records? How has that relationship been?
I started working with thriller records about a year and a half ago! It’s been a fun experience being able to explore a lot of my ideas with a bit more wiggle room, my manager and my team are incredible and this album wouldn’t be what it is without them.
You have a very unique style and aesthetic. Who/what inspires your style?
My style changes day to day! When I first started this album I was pulling a lot from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dawsons Creek! Lately I pull more from the 50s/60s and try to find one of one pieces that feel super unique!
You have a new single “Good Day to be My Dealer”, what is that song about?
That song started as a joke I made to the writer about how “a bad day for me is a good day for my dealer” and it snowballed into this vulnerable and honest song. As someone that has struggled with addiction and self sabotaging, I love the big moment at the end that feels super chaotic like you can’t shut off the voices in your head. I wanted it to feel uplifting in tone though to balance out the lyrics, it’s one of my favorites to dance to.
Now for some fun ones! What are 4 things you can’t go a day without?
hmm, I would say:
books (this is my favorite pass time to get me off my phone)
coffee (I’ve never been a coffee person but something about fall doesn’t seem right without it)
lipstick/lipgloss (I can be going to the grocery store without makeup and I just need a little gloss or I don’t feel like myself)
nail polish (as someone with a nail biting habit I’ve become obsessive about keeping my nails done and clean so I don’t chew them off)
If you could collaborate on a full album with another artist, who would it be?
This one is so hard for me…in a dream world I would love to work with kacey musgraves, lana del rey, haim
What is your go to depression meal.. Ya know, the go to comfort food?
my depression meals usually mean snacking the entire day on only goldfish and rice cakes!
Thank you so much for taking some time for us! Is there anything you’d like to plug?
thank you so much for having me! stream GIRL NEXT DOOR <3
“Good Day to be My Dealer” is the alt-pop artist’s latest release which is a savvy and entertaining track with witty introspective lyrics and music to tap your toe to. Lyrics like “i’m so sorry I can hardly look myself in the mirror, i’m so fucking weird” really show the person behind the music and is very relatable to many of us. Not just this track, but all of her songs are catchy with beautiful harmonies and melodies. Kailee Morgue has something for everyone and sky’s the limit with her debut album.
