SONG REVIEW: Heirloom - "The Furthest Corners"

Heirloom back at it again with another djenty banger in “The Furthest Corners”

Heirloom certainly know exactly what their virtues are when it comes to writing music - heavy, unrelenting riffs mixed with catchy songwriting and blistering breakdowns. Coming off of their short and sweet banger “Accuser”, the North Carolina-based quartet of djentlemen have returned with another feverish single, “The Furthest Corners”.

“The Furthest Corners” starts out with an insanely catchy, Northlane-esque riff that’s augmented by an industrial sounding backtrack. The song from the very beginning has no trouble at all grooving or making sure that the listener is banging their head. Where “The Furthest Corners” really shines is in the songwriting itself and goes to show just how each member can collectively become greater than the sum of their parts in a good song. While each instrument had certain sections in which they stood out, the song as a whole remained well balanced and not overshadowed by any particular force.

The chorus and ensuing breakdown of “The Furthest Corners” brought the song to a new level, amplifying the energy created by the opening riff and driving the song through the more subdued bridge. The song never lost steam, which speaks to the compositional prowess of the band and shows how valuable the skill set of songwriting is. Vocalist Nolan Smith was as excellent as always with a perfect blend of pitch screams to match the style of the song. Guitarists Kevin DeJong and Michael Evans were front and center with their chuggs and breakdowns while the rhythm section of Austin Smith on bass and Nick Leferson on drums kept the song grooving and hitting hard. 

Heirloom are one of the brightest young bands to emerge in the fairly new scene of progressive metalcore, and they’re certainly not to be slept on. After two fantastic singles, they’ve cemented their place on playlists around the world and will without a doubt share the stage with many of the internationally acclaimed acts that inspired them. The future is bright for Heirloom, and it seems they’re only just getting started.
