EP REVIEW: Violence - "Life Sentence EP"
Violence drops one of the heaviest EP’s of 2023
by Jesse Smith
Violence has to be one of the most fitting band names in the existence of music because this band could incite riots. Coming out of upstate New York is a relatively new metalcore heavy hitter that oozes exactly what their name is, violence. The band’s first release is in 2022, and since then they have been very active with releasing music as well as playing around their local scene. Now in 2023, They are back in a big way with their new 4 track short EP titled “Life Sentence” and let me tell you before we dive in, they brought it.
From the moment I hit play on track 1, “Leaving Life On Read” I knew this was going to be exactly what I wanted. As an intro track, this is as good as you get when it comes to making a a statement. The intro guitar alone, so simple, so evil, so effective. This was very reminiecent of the earlier versions of the heavier side of metalcore. Think Legend, early In Hearts Wake, and Serianna, there was something about that style that was just raw and powerful. This was the transition period when the big chrouses and electronics were dominating and the heavier side was being overlooked. This intro track opens the gates with a bone breaking breakdown that is slow and simple and really shows how brutal you are. The Violence train keeps moving full speed ahead into the next track “Lifeline” but this time they bring a little more guitar work. Still being brutal, they add in more percussive techniques and effects that are common in bands like Alpha Wolf and Emmure. Their vocals als really shine in this song, how primal they feel. There is no crazy gurgle sounds or demonic noises, it is straight energy and rage. They save the best for last because the final tracks have guest vocals pumping up the energy. “Warning Signs” has Harrison from the band Downswing and Heavy Hitter features Haydn of Oakheart. These vocal features are extremely cool because they aren't the usual people you see on everyones, they come from mid tier bands but they add a tremendous amount to each song they are on.
This whole EP is one heavy banger after another but never gets old. These are the kind of songs that you feel like you need to experience live to get another level of heaviness. For a band that is starting their career and still finding their identity as a band, I say they have their finger on the pulse. The style and production on these tracks are unique now, making it exciting but has the vibe of those that came before them. Wearing your influences on your sleeve is not a bad thing, especially when you do it in a unique way like they did. I was very very impressed with this EP and will be adding it to my gym playlist as should you. One thing before I go, This band should have a Chad Ruhlig feature, that would go insanely hard.
