SONG REVIEW: The Failsafe - "Ghost of You"

“The Failsafe is giving I Prevail vibes in new single Ghost Of You”

by Jesse Smith

If you want to talk about underrated bands in modern rock music, let me go first. Coming out of Minnesota there is a hard rock band that needs to be heard called The Failsafe. We all have those bands where you hear them for the first time and think they are six times bigger than they are, and that was me when I heard The Failsafe’s new single “Ghost Of You”. They sound like if I Prevail went full radio, which is exactly why I’m shocked they aren't talked about more. For a little more context into this group, the band has been releasing music since 2019 and is stemmed from band “The Phoenix Philosophy” which basically makes up the whole band with the addition of their bassist Benno Bowers (a win for bassist everywhere getting mentioned before the singer).

I went back and did a deep dive into the band’s discography, and “Ghost Of You'' is without a doubt my favorite song. The song is so bass driven and heavy that from the intro I was already hooked. The guitar tone that was picked really makes this song  hit like Mike Tyson. The intro is so captivating with the synth/piano behind the aggressive guitars that when it came back as the chorus I was full blown stink face headbanging. SInger Jesse Weber (nice name bro) has the perfect radio rock voice. When I said they sound like I Prevail without the screams, you really hear that in the massive chorus. Your band is only as good as your singer and I lose interest in a lot of talented bands because their vocals sound like trash. So when the music dropped out for verse one  when the vocals were first presented I was immediately on board. The Failsafe did a great job in creating a flow of the song and making the big parts noticeably big but having the slower parts not boring. Everything from the production to performance is a 10/10 for me. I think the next move for The Failsafe is to keep on this heavy but catchy path and continue to pump out the massive choruses.

The band definitely has roots in the mid 2000’s hard rock like Breaking Benjamin and even kind of has a power metal aspect which is really unique. Overall, this song was damn near perfect and should be getting far more attention then it has been getting. I found myself going back to the song multiple times in the last couple of days because it is just a great song and I can’t stop humming it. I’ll be keeping my eyes on this band, I just really hope the next single stays with this epic and heavy combo because it works.
