Cult Revival tread the line between pop punk and alternative metal in their sophomore single “YOU”

Written by JD Walker

In the age of internet marketing and the propensity of songs to go viral in an instant, there’s never been a better time to launch a new musical endeavor than right now. Cult Revival have seized the opportunity in their newly formulated group composed of seasoned musical veterans, and in their latest single “YOU” they combine the catchiness of the pop-punk atmosphere with the overcharged grit of alternative and nu metal for an addictive single.

“YOU” plays more like a pop-punk song from the beginning, with a groovy rhythm enveloped by a glistening lead guitar line. As the verse kicks in, the alternative influence becomes more apparent as the guitar concedes to a more gritty sounding chug while the vocals, sitting in a higher register, are reminiscent of old school emo or even prog rock in some aspects. The song seems to switch gears at every transition which makes for an incredibly interesting and attention-grabbing tune. The chorus features a massive hook from vocalist Chris Horton as well as the introductory groove reprised.

Where the song truly transformed was during the relaxed bridge section that divulged into a blatantly nu metal/hardcore breakdown. This saw a paradigm shift in the song that completely changed the mood and attitude of the group before coming back for one final chorus and a closing reprise of the breakdown. “YOU” features creative and unique songwriting that progresses upon itself, but doesn’t quite fit in the parameters of what makes “progressive metal”. It’s incredibly accessible, and the guitarwork of Ben Goodey and Craig Matthews was brilliantly complimented by the rhythm section of Will Evans on bass and Tate Sutton on drums.

The scary thing about Cult Revival is that they’re only just getting started. The Kent, England quintet are only on their second single of what will hopefully blossom into an illustrious career and clearly know what they’re doing. The group boast stellar musicianship as well as songwriting chops that exceed the industry standard, and the showmanship of the group displayed in the accompanying video will make for an entertaining live show. Overall, Cult Revival are an impressive new act on the alternative music scene and have all the opportunity in the world to make a true impact on the hearts, minds, and ears of listeners worldwide.
