SINGLE REVIEW: Twin Rova - "Pieces"
Twin Rova find the perfect mix of funky groove and tonal pop melodies with “Pieces”
Written by JD Walker
Twin Rova is going places. As bold of a take as that may sound right off the bat, take one listen to “Pieces” and you’ll see exactly why. The South East Coast trio utilizes a number of shades on their musical palette to illustrate an absolutely beautiful musical experience with rhythm and melody working in perfect unison and drawing from each other.
“Pieces” begins with a chill, ambient guitar riff from Luke Simmons with plenty of reverb and delay to sound cavernous and spacey. Just as the listener becomes accustomed to the subtle flurry of notes, the band drops into an absolute monster groove that starts on the upbeat but locks the backbeat down. Vocalist and guitarist Jason Thomas Wright bring his smooth voice to the limelight from the first verse through the song. The thing that makes “Pieces” truly shine is definitely the bass, and bassist Paul Jay exercised tasteful note choice and placement in his funky and overall stanky basslines.
Twin Rova are composed of excellent musicians, but their greatest skill and talent lies in their songwriting and composition capabilities. “Pieces” has the structure and hook of a pop song, the bite of a funk song, the beats of a hip-hop song, and the character of something found in the alternative music scene. “Pieces” is an anomaly, but by no means is that a bad thing. The group ebbs and flows between the respective sounds seemingly at will and has a clear understanding of how rhythm, melody, and harmony all interact in unison.
“Pieces” is one of those songs that hooks the listener from the top and just doesn’t stop. There’s something in this song for everyone with a broad appeal ranging from the casual listener that wants something to get stuck in their head, to the musician crowd that’s looking for technical prowess. “Pieces” is a song that belongs on repeat and will leave millions of listeners around the globe with the stankiest of stank faces. Overall, Twin Rova have struck gold with their latest effort and chances are it’s just the first of many hits for the group.
