To the musicians reading this: what are your favorite memories of being in a band? They likely involve a lot of laughs, candid moments, and overall good vibes. Whether those moments happened at a rehearsal, while recording a record, at a show, or even in a music video, those types of fond memories are (partially) why musicians fall in love with the experience of being in a band in the first place. Everything We’re Not captured that feeling perfectly through showing candid moments of their own in “My Mistake”.
Before the song begins, the video opens with a shot of the band members (for lack of a better term) screwing around while in the process of recording a record. It shows just how pure the songwriting and recording process can be for 4 dudes just hanging out and seeing what kind of sounds come out. The video then kicks into the song, an easy going tune that flows smoothly through the verses and choruses. While the song keeps a common thread and rudimentary son structure, it never drags or seems dilapidated. Guitarists Jasun Hayhurst and Jonathan Newton trade bluesy chords and arpeggios with a straightforward acoustic strumming pattern while bassist Alex Eldred and drummer Joseph Newton keep the song pumping with an upbeat cadence.
The video for “My Mistake” was just as much of a highlight as the song itself, with the majority of the video documenting the antics and special moments these 4 Chicago guys have shared with each other over the years. Whether it be riding a mini skateboard in Wal-Mart, taking the Ice Bucket Challenge, or ripping a house show full of friends, the band clearly have a deep bond with each other and have shared countless moments of hilarity, spontaneity, and joy with one another.
“My Mistake” is a feel good song for a vast number of reasons, the main reason being nostalgia. Many musicians out there miss the days when being in a band was just jamming with your friends and getting into some shenanigans after practice. Back in those days, music wasn’t so serious and the focus was on the moment and the friends made along the way. Everything We’re Not did a great job of capturing that genuine spark of friendship that continues to fuel their band. Never lose that spark, guys.
