SONG REVIEW: Saints of Never After - "SNVKES"

“Colorado’s Saints Of Never After’s new release left me dying for more!”

by Jesse Smith

So, you want drama, drugs, zombies, fight scenes and breakdowns? You wouldn’t believe this but there is a band in Colorado that has this oddly specific request. Saints Of Never After (SONA) is a band from the great state Colorado and recently they have released a single titled “SNVKES”. With this single comes an accompanying  music video that to me was so well done that I feel I have to talk about it with the song. Usually, Music Videos are cool and the visuals are cool but personally I haven’t been fired up to see a music video in a while, let alone have it stand out with the song to me. Honestly again, I just want to jump in and get talking about this because I really think it’s clever.

The video starts out with a nice opening shot of what looks to be a local town bar of blue collar workers and bikers when in walks four guys in suites, guess who the band is, it’s pretty obvious. The song doesn’t kick in right away which is really sick because we are about 20-30 seconds in and it’s all just setting the story. The vibe was very late 2000’s/early2010’s and really gave iwrestledabearonce vibes which is the direction I really thought it was going to go in when the music started. It’s a really heavy build up that has those really cool picked out panic chords. Not the high pitched screech ones, that cut the inside of your ear, the lower ones that when you hear it live suddenly you’re six feet to the right. As the song kicks in you see that the vocalist who screams is not in a suit and is one of the locals. The band brings the aggression and starts of the strong, really hard and heavy. But when the second vocalist came in he was singing like a pop star. I went from thinking this band was going to be chaotic craziness to being a really structured band. The song really stuck with the early 2010’s vibe and that style of metalcore when suddenly there was a fight scene. Full on fight scene in the video and then the bad guys turn into zombies and bite one of the suited members neck. Do you see now how captivatingly random that is? The storytelling was brilliant, and the video wasn’t crazy high budget which made the vibe even better in  my opinion. After a second chorus it’s time for the climax and it didn’t disappoint. Breakdown with a zombie horde?! Sign me up, I was hooked. The breakdown was heavy and straightforward. The energy was definitely high and the song was great to listen to.

My first thought after watching it for the first time was “these guys got it”. The planning and execution on the creative side from the song to the video was incredible and well put together. The visuals over time while the quality got insane amounts better in the last 10 years, I felt story telling hasn’t grabbed me but this was a nice change of pace and the song memorable. Overall this band is worth the search and deep dive, Stream the new song and pretend you’re fighting off zombies yourself.
