SONG REVIEW: Riding With Killers - "What Comes Next"
“Riding With Killers is what comes next in the Radio Rock genre”
by Jesse Smith
Oh, I’m sorry, you thought rock and roll was dead? You are sadly mistaken, in fact I believe we are transitioning into the next generation of it as we speak! Taking a look at the major rock festivals in the USA and abroad, there is a trend and if you stood at mainstage at these festivals you would see that radio rock is thriving. Also, now more than ever up and coming rock bands are at an all time high and one band that is nailing this sound is Detroit natives Riding With Killers. First of all, take a second to appreciate how amazing that band name is. Secondly, Their new song “What Comes Next” is the perfect example of how Rock music is alive and kicking ass!
“What Comes Next” is an introspective look into the flaws of corporate America and the mindless jobs 90% of us feel like we’re stuck in. The next underground anthem for the working class and for everyone who is fed up with how things have been. As the song starts, the first 10 seconds are barebones but has a vocal harmony that grows and grows as a transition into a powerful drum build up that is just perfect for capturing my attention. They leave the power for the chorus which is simple in lyrics and is easy to pick up and scream along to. The real impressive part is the bridge. As the guitar matches the vocals it just hits every bullet point of what I loved about Radio Rock. “What Comes Next” is a different kind of heavy, but heavy nonetheless.
If you’re like me you need something different from Screaming and breakdowns that isn’t pop punk. Riding With Killers nails the modern rock sound and delivers one hell of a punch. Along with this new single, they have a cover of “everyday is exactly the same” and it sounds exactly like the original which impressed me even more. The up and coming bands in the Rock genre get overlooked so often because that scene is not as supportive of the underground artist as the scene is, which we should really take pride in but that also needs to change. Rock music kicks ass and it’s a great alternative to when you need heavy without screaming. Riding With Killers deserves to be noticed way more than they are, and if you took the time to give them a shot, you would see what I mean.
