SONG REVIEW: LONG/LAST - Vain

LONG/LAST combines epic vocal hooks with soaring melodies in “Vain”

Written by JD Walker

Every now and again, a new song becomes instantly memorable from the very first note. Especially with incredible vocal hooks, a truly skillful musician will leave the listener wondering “how in the hell did they do that?” LONG/LAST is categorically one of these bands, and their latest single “Vain” is truly infectious from the getgo between the well written instrumental and powerhouse vocals.

“Vain” fades slowly into the opening section before smacking the listener like a ton of bricks - saying that the opening vocal line from Gabe Dresback is incredible would be a massive understatement. Dresback’s vocals set the tone of the song and guitarist Forrest Keller matches the melodic intensity by bringing riff after riff, crafting a song that ebbs and flows and truly leads the listener on a journey throughout the song. The song transitions between mellow verses and inspirationally high energy choruses, almost bringing a tear to the eye of those that appreciate a great hook.

“Vain” is an epic song from start to finish - with an instrumental that leverages hip hop influence during the quiet sections and driving, soaring guitars during the parts that need energy and an extra “umph”, the song would stand alone as an instrumental. Paired with the breathtaking vocal line that graces the song, it makes for an incredible experience all around for the listener. Dresback’s vocals are reminiscent of the legendary Craig Owens of Chiodos, Michael Jagmin of A Skylit Drive, and in some facets, Rody Walker of Protest The Hero. Not to be outdone by his partner in the group, the stringsman Keller’s instrumentation and choice of phrasing compliments the tonality of the song perfectly. The synchronicity of the vocals and guitar work makes “Vain” a truly astounding song from head to toe.

LONG/LAST have something incredibly special going for them. It’s hard to believe that this Colorado-based group is just a duo, as their sound leads the listener to believe that there’s so much more going on than just two people showing their musical prowess. The powerhouse duo of Dresback and Keller play perfectly off of each other and work seamlessly in tandem, and “Vain” is a testament to that. If their forthcoming material is even half as good as this single, this band is poised to capitalize on their limitless potential and have a career for the record books.
