SONG REVIEW: Our Demise - "Vultures"
“Deathcore is exciting again because of bands like Our Demise”
by Jesse Smith
You know, it’s getting really annoying whenever I find a new band that I instantly fall in love with… They’re from Australia. Seriously, WTF is in the water over there other than sharks and 99 other things that can kill me. Well, Australia has done it again! There is a new band from Perth that is bringing the bang back in deathcore. Our Demise is an outstanding up and coming deathcore band that is already making some noise. Releasing their first single in February of last year, they haven’t released anything else…. Until now! Going that long of a time not releasing something you better come out with a bang, and a bang they did.
“Vultures” is the band's second recorded single that was released August 27th, 2023. From the very first second, I was hooked in with how evil it sounded. I haven’t had this feeling since I heard the song “Light Bearer” by their Australian brothers Thy Art Is Murder. Simple and effective as they repeat the same two strong open hits over and over with an eerie guitar trill laying behind. Just as you believe it won’t get heavier, they transition to the toughest build up. This is the kind of build up that splits a room, It’s the 3rd sound of the apocalypse, with 1 and 2 being and open china hit and the “ting” of a bell before dying. For the first long minute the band just focuses on being as heavy and ignorant as they can. They pick up the tempo and showcase their skills individually with some faster riffs, off time synced hits and wide vocal range. But even as they trail of the ignorance, you’re still in fight mode. Like every deathcore song, it’s a roller coaster of tempo going up and breaking it back down, but as they came in they leave. This song features the vocalist of the band Sedative, Matthew Daly and the switch up he brings ties the knot into this powerhouse track. Being on the other end of the spectrum vocally, as these vocalist sync up in the end they leave an impression in your brain.
Not only was this song worth the year and a half wait, but now it is making me scared we will have to wait again! This band oozes brutality from image to songwriting and I wouldn’t be shocked to see them tour AU with some up and coming international acts like Paleface Swiss or Bodysnatcher. Mixing both old and new styles of Deathcore makes me love what that side of the scene has been doing over the last couple of years. Deathcore is exciting again and it’s because bands like Our Demise.
