ALBUM REVIEW: Devil In The Details - "The Hell You Wanted"
Devil In The Details meld furious melodies with ambiance in “The Hell You Wanted”
Written by JD Walker
What element comes to mind when you think of hell? If you guessed “fire”, you’re right on. That’s exactly what Devil In The Details dropped with their newest album “The Hell You Wanted” - pure fire. Their latest offering plays like a classic metalcore album with enough grit and viciousness in the songwriting to ignite circle pits in venues (eventually) and living rooms alike. The debut full length comes shortly after the band announced a partnership with Ghost Killer Entertainment and a slew of singles.
Melody and rhythm have a mutually inclusive coexistence, and while many bands aim to have a certain juxtaposition among the two, Devil In The Details hit the nail on the head by bringing an aggressive approach to both. Guitarists Aaron Koening and Danny Casteel display their riffage and chops with bangers such as “No Religion” and “Well Spent”, while bassist Dylan Luttrell and drummer Matt Lund push along more rhythmically-driven songs like “Lost in Los Angeles” (which also features Jonathan Grimes of Outline in Color).
While the instrumentals stand tall in their own right, vocalist Sean Thomas truly brought this album to the next level. He combines elements from previous metalcore vocal giants such as Sam Carter, Austin Carlile, and Jonny Craig with a unique approach that makes these songs and techniques his own. His versatile style compliments the band well and as a cohesive unit they put themselves above the industry standard as songwriters, composers, and musicians.
“The Hell You Wanted” is a certified banger front to back. Just when they’ve brought the listener to a boiling point with viscous breakdowns and ripping riffs, they dip to ethereal and chilling ambiance that builds tension into the next section of the song. 2020 has offered some amazing albums and Devil In The Details have created a work of art that stands with every single release we’ve seen thus far. If you’re beginning to build your list of top releases of 2020, “The Hell You Wanted” has firmly earned a spot without any shadow of a doubt.
