SONG REVIEW: 6 Acre Earth - Bomb Voyage
“A look into the future of Post-Hardcore from a nostalgic window”
by Jesse Smith
If you read my reviews, you know that I rant and rave about the amazing up and coming acts that the world has to offer, and 6 acre earth has been on the top of my list for about a year now, but the problem was they haven’t released anything new in a year! Well that has finally changed with this new banger “Bomb Voyage”. Popping up in 2019 with a few demos, the band really didn’t go full throttle until their 2020 song “Too Late” which is the song I heard first from them. Since then, the band released another single in 2021 and have been pretty quiet since, that is until now! This trio really have the post hardcore/emo thing down to a science and with the success of “Too Late” soaring well over a half of a million streams on spotify, I can’t see this single being any different.
With the re-emerging emo scene happening right now, when I say this sounds like 2013 warped tour music, I say it with the utmost admiration because that is the style of music I will live and die in. The start to the song gives Blessthefall vibes with an energetic rhythm section with a sweet lead melody. Lead vocalist Ben Willey is a lyrical genius as well as one of the most unique sounding voices the scene has never heard of. Reminiscent of a Vic Fuentes but way less whiny and a lot more talent, Ben’s vocal melody choices make it feel like it is floating on top of the music making it stand out so much more. This single is a well crafted song from everything from the songwriting to the energetic vibes that never cease. Bassist Spencer Gamache and guitarist Tyler Gamache carry the most weight of the song on their backs with the incredible and aggressive rhythms and beautiful leads that make the song as good as it is. Nothing in this song was over complicated or harsh to listen to which made this an easy repeat listen. Lyrics that really stood out to me was “I’ve seen it all so black and white. But I just might be color blind” and that whole verse was the first time that made my eyebrows raise and I had to rewind to listen to it again. Like all good emo songs that stand the test of time, the lyrics are like poetry that resonate with others and create an emotional connection which 6 Acre Earth are already pros at. This single is also accompanied with a music video that oozes emo, new and old school. Having the newspaper walls has definitely been played out, but the color contrast was super interesting and made this old scene feel new and youthful which is what the scene needs right now.
6 Acre Earth has the potential to be a band that redefines post hardcore in the 2020’s and brings the spirit back effortlessly. I have always asked myself the question “would the style of music I liked back in highschool still be cool if someone made it now” and the answer is yes but not without incredible talents and a little innovation. If this act can be a little more active I know they could go very far in the industry in a relatively quick time frame, but for now I will keep enjoying this treat of a single and be content. Unsigned bands… The bar is set.
